The STARRETT 57169 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, die makers, and machinists who require a precision-ground blank ready for heat treatment. Measuring 0.25 inches thick, 1 inch wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock ships in an oversize condition with a thickness tolerance of +0.010 to +0.015 inches, a width tolerance of +0.010 to +0.015 inches, a length tolerance of +0.25 inches, and a square tolerance of +0.010 to +0.015 inches. The extra material allows the machinist to grind to final dimension before or after hardening. A2 steel offers excellent dimensional stability through the air-hardening cycle, making it a reliable choice for punches, dies, gauges, and similar precision tooling.
This flat stock is used in tool and die shops, maintenance machining environments, and precision fabrication settings. It is suited for applications where the finished part will be heat treated to high hardness after rough machining. A2 tool steel flat stock is worked by qualified machinists and toolmakers using standard milling, grinding, and sawing equipment. All cutting and grinding operations should be completed before or staged around the heat-treatment cycle per the material specification requirements for A2 steel. Eye protection, appropriate cutting fluids, and proper ventilation are standard requirements when machining tool steels. Consult the material data sheet for recommended hardening temperatures and quench procedures before heat treating.
