The STARRETT 57162 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 3/16 inches thick, 1 inch wide, and 18 inches long. A2 tool steel is a versatile, air-hardening die steel known for its balanced combination of wear resistance, toughness, and dimensional stability during heat treatment. This flat stock is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining and subsequent heat treating by tool and die makers, machinists, and industrial fabricators. Thickness, width, and square tolerances are held to +0.010 to +0.015 inches, with a length tolerance of +0.25 inches.
This flat stock is suited for tool and die shops, machine shops, and maintenance departments requiring pre-dimensioned A2 stock for punches, dies, gauges, jigs, and fixtures. The 18-inch length and 1-inch width make it practical for short-run tooling and replacement component fabrication where consistent cross-section and tight tolerances are required before final grinding and heat treatment.
Designed as a standard A2 air-hardening tool steel flat bar for general tool and die, punch, gauge, and fixture fabrication applications requiring AISI A2 material specification.
Machining and grinding should be completed prior to heat treating. A2 tool steel is air-hardened, meaning parts are heated to austenitizing temperature and then cooled in still air — furnace atmosphere control is recommended to minimize decarburization. Follow established heat-treat procedures and shop safety protocols including appropriate PPE when handling heated material. Consult material supplier data sheets for full heat treatment parameters.
