The STARRETT 57082 is a horizontal-style dial test indicator designed for precision measurement in machine shop, tool room, and field calibration work. It features a 0-30-0 balanced dial reading with a maximum measurement range of 0.06 inches and a graduation of 0.001 inches per division, giving technicians reliable readings for runout, alignment, and surface variation checks. The 1-3/8 inch diameter white dial improves readability in low-contrast environments. A jeweled bearing movement reduces friction and extends service life under repeated use. The dovetail mount is the standard interface for most indicator holders, magnetic bases, and transfer fixtures used by machinists, metrologists, and precision tradespeople.
The 57082 is suited for horizontal indicator applications where the contact point must approach the workpiece parallel to the spindle axis. This configuration is common in surface plate inspection, lathe setup, and fixture alignment tasks. The adjustable, replaceable contact point with a 90-degree swivel angle adds flexibility when clearance is limited or approach angles vary. The 1-5/16 inch contact point length and 0.0787 inch ball diameter are standard for this indicator series, making contact point replacement straightforward.
Designed for use with standard dovetail-mount indicator holders and magnetic base systems. Compatible with contact points and accessories in the STARRETT 811 series.
Installation is performed by machinists, metrologists, and precision measurement technicians. Secure the dovetail shank firmly in the holder before zeroing the indicator to prevent slippage during measurement. Avoid applying side load to the contact point stem beyond the specified swivel range, as this can introduce measurement error or damage the movement. When replacing the contact point, use only compatible ball-tipped contacts to maintain calibrated accuracy.
