The STARRETT 57048 is a flat stock bar of AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel, ground and cut to a nominal 3/4 inch thickness, 3 inches wide, and 18 inches long. O1 is a general-purpose tool steel valued for its dimensional stability during heat treat and its ability to achieve high hardness with an oil quench. This stock is used by machinists, toolmakers, and die makers to fabricate punches, dies, gauges, knives, and other tooling components that require a hard, wear-resistant finished surface. Thickness and width tolerances of +0.0100 to +0.0150 inches and a length tolerance of +0.2500 inches ensure consistent stock removal during final grinding.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, tool rooms, and maintenance departments that machine or grind their own tooling in-house. At 11.48 pounds, the bar is manageable for bench work and can be cut, milled, or surface-ground with standard toolroom equipment before hardening. It is appropriate for both short-run production tooling and prototype fixturing where close dimensional control after heat treat is required. The oil-hardening characteristic of O1 reduces quench distortion compared to water-hardening grades, making it a practical choice when holding tight post-hardening tolerances matters.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for fabrication of dies, punches, gauges, blades, and general toolroom components requiring hardening by oil quench.
Machining and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists familiar with O1 steel properties. Always stress-relieve the workpiece before finish grinding when tight tolerances are required post-hardening. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting, grinding, or heat treating. Follow applicable shop safety standards and equipment manufacturer guidelines for furnace operation and quench handling.
