The STARRETT 57046 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 0.75 inches thick, 2 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a weight of 7.65 pounds. Thickness and width tolerances are held to +0.010 to 0.015 inches, and length tolerance is +0.25 inches. Edge squareness is controlled to 0.003 inches per inch across all edges. O1 tool steel offers good machinability in the annealed state and hardens well in an oil quench, making it a reliable choice for punches, dies, gauges, and general toolroom stock.
This flat stock is suited for toolroom and shop floor use wherever a consistent, machinable O1 bar is needed before heat treatment. Machinists, tool and die makers, and fabricators use this stock to rough-machine workpieces to near-net shape prior to hardening. At 18 inches in length, the bar yields multiple blanks from a single piece, reducing scrap and setup time. It is appropriate for both light and medium toolmaking operations in job shops, maintenance facilities, and production toolrooms.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar for toolroom, die-making, and precision fabrication applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
This is raw stock material machined and heat-treated by qualified tool and die makers or machinists. Follow established shop safety practices when sawing, milling, or grinding tool steel. Heat treatment to harden O1 steel requires oil quenching and should be performed by personnel familiar with tool steel heat-treat procedures and appropriate furnace equipment. Wear appropriate PPE when handling freshly cut or ground edges.
