The STARRETT 57011 is a precision-ground O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 3/8 inch thick, 6 inches wide, and 18 inches long. AISI Type O1 tool steel is a tungsten-bearing oil-hardening grade known for its excellent dimensional stability during heat treatment, good machinability in the annealed state, and strong wear resistance after hardening. This bar is used by tool-and-die makers, machinists, and metalworking tradespeople who need a close-tolerance, ready-to-machine blank for dies, punches, gauges, jigs, and fixtures. At 11.47 pounds, the bar carries enough cross-section for substantial tooling applications while remaining manageable on the bench.
O1 flat stock in this size range is a standard starting blank in job shops, toolrooms, and maintenance departments that fabricate or repair cutting tools, forming dies, and precision fixtures. The 3/8-inch thickness suits thin-profile die plates and wear pads, while the 6-inch width allows layout of multiple tool blanks from a single piece. The 18-inch length is a conventional cut length that minimizes saw time when parting out individual blanks. Machinists and tool-and-die makers are the primary trade users; precision grinding and EDM shops also use O1 flat stock as raw material for cavity inserts and electrodes.
Designed as a standard raw-material blank for toolroom and die-making applications requiring AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel in flat bar form.
O1 tool steel flat stock is machined in the annealed condition using standard high-speed or carbide tooling; cutting fluids are recommended to extend tool life and maintain surface finish. Heat treatment to working hardness requires oil quenching and should be performed by a qualified heat treater following established time-temperature guidelines for AISI O1. Always allow the bar to reach ambient temperature before precision grinding or measuring. Personal protective equipment, including eye protection and cut-resistant gloves, is required when sawing or grinding tool steel.
