The STARRETT 57006 is an O1 oil-hardening flat stock bar made from AISI Type O1 tool steel. It measures 3/8 inch thick, 3 inches wide, and 18 inches long, providing a ready-to-machine blank for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers. O1 tool steel offers good machinability in the annealed state and responds well to oil quench hardening, making it a reliable choice for punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools. Thickness and width tolerances are held to +0.010 to 0.015 inches, with a length tolerance of +0.250 inches and an edge squareness specification of 0.003 per inch.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, tool-and-die operations, and maintenance machining environments where a general-purpose oil-hardening grade is required. The 18-inch length allows for multiple blanks to be cut from a single piece, reducing material waste on short-run tooling projects. It is appropriate for both production tooling and prototype work where dimensional consistency and predictable heat treatment response are priorities.
Designed as an OEM-style flat stock blank for general tool-and-die, punch, gauge, and cutting tool fabrication applications requiring AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel.
Machining and heat treatment of O1 tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers using appropriate metalworking equipment. The material is supplied in the annealed condition and should be hardened and tempered per AISI O1 specifications before use in high-stress tooling applications. Always use proper personal protective equipment when cutting, grinding, or heat treating tool steel. Follow applicable shop safety codes and procedures for handling and storing steel bar stock.
