The STARRETT 57000 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need a ready-to-use blank for punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools. The bar is ground to 0.375 inches thick, 0.75 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with thickness and width tolerances of +0.0100 to +0.0150 inches and a length tolerance of +0.25 inches. Squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch on all edges. AISI Type O1 material offers good machinability in the annealed state and develops high hardness after oil quenching, making it a common choice for short-run tooling and precision fixtures.
This flat stock is suited for machine shop and tool room applications where a pre-sized, ground bar stock eliminates rough-stock setup time. Typical uses include blanks for form tools, stripper plates, small die sections, and precision spacers. The 18-inch length provides enough material for multiple shorter blanks when cross-cut to size. This stock ships in the annealed condition and must be hardened and tempered by the end user to achieve working hardness.
Designed as a standard ground flat stock blank for tool room and machine shop use where AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel is specified.
Machining and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by a qualified machinist or tool and die maker. All grinding, drilling, or cutting operations should be completed before hardening. Oil quenching and tempering must follow accepted heat-treat procedures for AISI O1 steel to avoid cracking or distortion. Handle ground stock with care to avoid edge nicks that may affect tolerance-sensitive applications.
