The STARRETT 56989 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in precision toolmaking, die work, punch fabrication, and general machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 5/16 inches thick, 3/4 inches wide, and 18 inches long, and weighs 1.2 pounds. Thickness and width tolerances are held to +0.0100 to +0.0150 inches, with a length tolerance of +0.2500 inches. Edge squareness is controlled to 0.003 inches per inch. O1 tool steel is a widely used oil-quench grade that offers good machinability in the annealed state and develops high hardness after heat treatment.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating custom cutting tools, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and small die components in machine shops, tool rooms, and maintenance departments. The 18-inch length provides a practical working blank that can be cut to size before or after hardening. Machinists, toolmakers, and maintenance technicians working in industrial or production environments are the primary users of this stock.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 tool steel flat stock blank suitable for toolmaking, gaugemaking, and die fabrication applications requiring oil-hardening tool steel to AISI O1 specification.
O1 tool steel flat stock is typically processed by machinists or toolmakers using conventional milling, grinding, and turning equipment prior to heat treatment. All cutting and grinding operations should be completed in the annealed state before oil quenching. Heat treatment should follow established AISI O1 hardening and tempering procedures and should be performed by qualified personnel using calibrated equipment. Proper personal protective equipment is required when handling sharp-edged stock and during any heat-treat operations.
