The STARRETT 56985 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, punch fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 0.25 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a shipping weight of 7.65 pounds. Thickness and width tolerances run +0.0100 to 0.0150 inches, and length tolerance is +0.2500 inches. Edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch on all edges. O1 tool steel machines well in the annealed state and responds predictably to oil-hardening heat treatment, making it a standard choice for toolroom stock.
This flat stock is suited for machine shops, toolrooms, and fabrication operations that require precision-ground or precision-rolled tool steel in a ready-to-machine form. Typical applications include jigs, fixtures, gauges, cutting tools, punches, dies, and machine components that will be hardened and tempered after rough machining. The 6-inch wide by 18-inch long profile provides enough material for a range of toolroom layout and cutting tasks without requiring additional sizing from larger bar stock.
Designed as a standard toolroom flat stock for use in applications requiring AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel in bar or plate form.
Cutting and machining should be performed while the material is in the annealed state prior to hardening. Heat treatment, including austenitizing, quenching in oil, and tempering, should be carried out by qualified personnel following recognized metallurgical guidelines for O1 tool steel. Secure the workpiece properly before cutting or grinding to prevent movement. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when machining or heat treating tool steel.
