The STARRETT 56977 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 0.25 inches thick, 1.75 inches wide, and 18 inches long. O1 tool steel is a general-purpose, oil-hardening grade known for good machinability in the annealed state and consistent response to heat treatment. This flat stock is used by machinists, toolmakers, and die makers to fabricate punches, dies, gauges, cutting tools, and other precision tooling components. Thickness and width tolerances are held to +0.010 to +0.015 inches, and edge squareness is controlled to 0.003 inches per inch, supporting close-tolerance layout and machining work.
This flat stock is suited for tool-and-die shops, maintenance departments, and job shops requiring a reliably sized, readily heat-treatable steel blank. Typical applications include producing custom punches, blanking dies, bushings, cams, and wear strips. The 18-inch length provides enough material for multiple small tooling blanks from a single piece. Because this is annealed stock, it can be machined to near-final shape before oil hardening and tempering to the desired working hardness.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 tool steel flat stock blank suitable for fabrication of punches, dies, gauges, and precision tooling components in standard tool-and-die and machining applications.
Material should be machined using standard tooling practices appropriate for annealed tool steel. Oil hardening and tempering should be performed by a qualified heat treater or toolmaker following accepted procedures for AISI O1 steel. Always wear appropriate PPE when sawing, grinding, or heat-treating tool steel. Final grinding after heat treatment should account for any scale or minor distortion from the hardening process.
