The STARRETT 56966 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, punch fabrication, and precision machining applications. This piece measures 3/16 inch thick, 4 inches wide, and 18 inches long, and is manufactured to AISI Type O1 material specification. Thickness and width tolerances are held to +0.0100 to 0.0150 inches, and length tolerance is +0.2500 inches. Edge squareness is controlled to 0.003 inches per inch on all edges. The stock ships in an annealed condition, ready for machining before oil-quench hardening.
O1 tool steel flat stock is a standard choice for shops producing custom cutting tools, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and short-run dies. It machines cleanly in the annealed state and responds predictably to oil-quench heat treatment, making it suitable for both tool and die makers and precision metalworking facilities. At 3/16 inch thick and 4 inches wide, this bar is well-suited to plate tooling, stripper plates, and flat die components where close dimensional tolerance is required from the start.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 material.
Machining and heat treatment of tool steel flat stock is performed by qualified machinists and tool and die makers using appropriate cutting tools, coolant, and grinding equipment. O1 tool steel is oil-quench hardened after final machining; consult a qualified heat-treating procedure for proper soak temperatures and quench media before processing. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or heat-treating tool steel. Handle edges with care, as the machined edges of flat stock can be sharp.
