The STARRETT 56963 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need a ground, ready-to-machine blank. This piece measures 3/16 inches thick, 2 inches wide, and 18 inches long and is manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification. O1 is a general-purpose tool steel known for good machinability in the annealed state and reliable hardness response when oil quenched. Thickness and width tolerances are held to +0.010 to 0.015 inches. Length tolerance is +0.25 inches. Edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch, making it suitable for precise layout and tooling applications without extensive pre-machining.
This flat stock is used in machine shops, toolrooms, and maintenance departments for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and cutting tools. It ships in the annealed condition, ready for machining prior to heat treatment. The 18-inch length and 2-inch width make it practical for short-run tooling blanks, lathe tool stock, and general flat die work. It is appropriate for both production tool shops and individual trade professionals requiring a single piece of precision tool steel.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for general toolroom and die-making applications where O1 specification material is required.
Machining and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolmaker. Always follow proper shop safety procedures when cutting, grinding, or milling tool steel, including the use of appropriate PPE and machine guarding. Oil quenching during hardening requires a controlled quench tank and should be performed according to established metallurgical practices for O1 tool steel. Allow the material to fully cool before handling post-quench, and perform a stress-relief temper promptly to reduce the risk of cracking.
