The STARRETT 56960 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 3/16 inches thick, 1 inch wide, and 18 inches long. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock is produced from tool steel and is intended for use in toolmaking, die work, jig and fixture fabrication, and precision machining applications. The 56960 ships in its pre-hardened annealed state, ready for machining, grinding, and final heat treating by the end user. Thickness and width tolerances are held to +0.0100 to +0.0150 inches, and length tolerance is +0.2500 inches. Squareness is controlled to 0.003 inches per inch on all edges, making this stock suitable for close-tolerance work.
This flat stock is suited for machine shops, tool and die makers, mold makers, and maintenance shops that require consistent, machinable tool steel in small quantities. It is appropriate for fabricating punches, dies, blades, gauges, and similar tooling components. The 18-inch length and 1-inch width make it practical for single-piece tooling blanks as well as multiple shorter components cut from one bar. It is available in single-piece quantities, making it accessible for prototype and short-run work as well as production restocking.

This material is supplied in the annealed condition and should be machined or ground to final dimensions before heat treatment. Oil-hardening heat treatment should be performed by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures for AISI Type O1 tool steel. Appropriate personal protective equipment and ventilation are required during any grinding, machining, or heat-treating operations. Always inspect stock for straightness before beginning layout to ensure accurate finished dimensions.
