The STARRETT 56511 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.625 inches thick, 1.5 inches wide, and 36 inches long, this flat stock is produced to tight dimensional tolerances, including a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches and a width tolerance of plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches. The length tolerance is plus 0.25 inches. Squareness is held to an edge tolerance of 0.003 inches per inch across all edges. Machinist and toolroom professionals use this material for punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools.
A2 tool steel is a general-purpose air-hardening grade known for good wear resistance, moderate toughness, and dimensional stability during heat treat. This flat stock is suited for low-to-medium production tooling where through-hardening and minimal distortion are priorities. It is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining before heat treatment. Typical users include tool and die makers, mold shops, and maintenance machinists working in both job shop and industrial manufacturing environments.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock bar for use in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications requiring air-hardening material in annealed condition.
Machining, grinding, and heat treating of A2 tool steel should be performed by qualified toolroom machinists or heat treat professionals familiar with AISI A2 procedures. Always follow applicable shop safety standards when cutting or grinding tool steel. Heat treatment including hardening and tempering cycles should reference AISI A2 specifications and be performed with appropriate equipment. Handle long bar stock with care to avoid bending or surface damage before machining.
