The STARRETT 56509 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.625 inches thick, 0.75 inches wide, and 36 inches long, this flat stock is held to tight dimensional tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness, plus or minus 0.001 inches on squareness, and a width tolerance of plus 0.000 to plus 0.005 inches. The length tolerance is plus 0.25 inches. At 5.49 pounds per piece, this bar is sized for single-piece jobs or stock for tool and die shops. It ships as a single piece with a minimum order quantity of one.
A2 tool steel is a general-purpose air-hardening cold-work steel. It is commonly used for blanking dies, forming dies, punches, gauges, and precision tooling components where dimensional stability during heat treatment is required. This flat stock is suited for machine shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance departments that need pre-cut bar stock ready for grinding and machining to final dimensions. The air-hardening characteristic of A2 minimizes distortion during the hardening process compared to oil-hardening grades.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock bar suitable for tool and die fabrication, punch and die sets, gauge blocks, and precision machining applications requiring air-hardening cold-work steel.
Machining and grinding of A2 tool steel flat stock is typically performed by tool and die makers or skilled machinists. Carbide tooling is recommended for roughing operations prior to heat treatment. Heat treatment including hardening and tempering should be performed by a qualified heat treater following AISI A2 guidelines. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or machining tool steel bar stock.
