The STARRETT 55893 is a dial drop indicator designed for precise linear measurement in machining, inspection, and quality-control applications. It covers a measurement range of 0 to 0.1 inches with a graduation of 0.001 inches per division, giving technicians reliable, repeatable readings on close-tolerance work. The balanced and tapered hands read against a 0-20-0 white eggshell dial face with a no-glare, unbreakable crystal bezel. A built-in revolution counter tracks full-stroke travel, and the frictionally adjustable bezel allows quick zero-setting without tools. The jeweled bearing construction reduces friction and extends service life in high-cycle inspection routines.
This indicator is suited for use on surface plates, magnetic bases, transfer stands, and fixture-mounted holders in machine shops, fabrication facilities, and precision maintenance environments. The lug back mount is a standard attachment style compatible with a wide range of indicator holders and transfer gauging setups. Trades that commonly use this tool include machinists, toolmakers, millwrights, and mechanical maintenance technicians performing alignment, runout, or flatness checks on rotating or stationary parts.
Designed as an OEM-style precision measuring instrument for use with standard lug-back indicator holders, magnetic bases, and surface-plate transfer fixtures commonly found in machine shop and inspection environments.
Mounting is performed by machinists or mechanical technicians using a standard lug-back clamp or holder. Ensure the stem is seated squarely and the indicator spindle contacts the workpiece perpendicular to the measured surface to avoid cosine error. Do not overtighten the lug clamp, as this can distort the case and affect calibration. Zero the bezel after mounting and before taking measurements.
