The STARRETT 55060 is a low carbon steel flat bar cut to 24 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 1-1/4 inches thick. It is manufactured to AISI Type C1018 specification, a mild steel grade known for consistent machinability, weldability, and surface quality. The bar ships as a single piece weighing 34 pounds. Tight tolerances are held across all three dimensions: length is held to a plus 0.625 inch tolerance, width to plus 0.000 to 0.005 inch, and thickness and squareness each to plus or minus 0.001 inch. This level of dimensional control makes it suitable for precision layout, toolmaking, jig building, and structural fabrication work where stock flatness and squareness matter.
This flat stock is used across machine shops, fabrication shops, and maintenance facilities. It serves as raw material for fixtures, bases, brackets, keys, and wear plates. The C1018 grade machines cleanly, accepts cold forming well, and welds without special preheat under most shop conditions. Typical users include machinists, millwrights, and fabricators who need a predictable, tight-tolerance flat bar that can be cut, drilled, and shaped to final dimensions on the bench or under a mill.
Designed as a general-purpose flat bar for fabrication, toolmaking, and structural applications requiring AISI C1018 low carbon steel in a 1-1/4 x 4 x 24 inch size.
Cut, drill, and machine using tooling rated for mild steel. Secure the bar in a vise or fixture before cutting to prevent movement. Wear appropriate PPE including eye protection and gloves when machining or grinding. Apply a light coat of oil to exposed surfaces if the part will be stored before use to prevent surface rust.
