The STARRETT 55018 is a low carbon steel flat stock bar measuring 24 inches long, 1 inch wide, and 0.75 inches thick, conforming to AISI Type C1018 material specification. It is machined to close tolerances, making it suitable for layout, toolmaking, fixturing, and general fabrication work in machine shops and industrial environments. The bar weighs approximately 5.1 pounds. Thickness and square tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inch, while width tolerance is plus 0.000 to 0.005 inch and length tolerance is plus 0.625 inch. Machinists, tool and die makers, and millwrights commonly work with C1018 flat stock for precision component fabrication.
This flat stock is used in a wide range of metalworking applications including jig and fixture construction, spacer and shim fabrication, machine component stock, and general structural applications where a weldable, machinable low carbon steel is required. It is appropriate for both job shop and maintenance environments where off-the-shelf bar stock needs to be cut to final dimension.
Designed as a standard AISI C1018 low carbon steel flat bar suitable for general machining, fabrication, and toolmaking applications where close-tolerance cold-finished flat stock is specified.
Cutting operations should be performed with appropriate metal-cutting tools rated for low carbon steel; standard HSS or carbide tooling is commonly used. Secure the workpiece firmly in a vise or fixture before cutting or drilling to prevent movement. Wear appropriate PPE including eye protection and gloves when cutting or grinding. Deburr all cut edges before handling or assembly.
