The STARRETT 54993 is a low carbon steel flat stock bar made to AISI Type C1018 specification. It measures 24 inches long, 5 inches wide, and 0.5 inches thick, and weighs 17 pounds. C1018 is a general-purpose mild steel known for consistent machinability, good weldability, and adequate surface hardness for light case-hardening applications. Tolerances are tightly controlled: length runs long at plus 0.625 inches, width holds plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches, and both thickness and squareness are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches. Machinists, fabricators, and maintenance technicians use this stock for fixture plates, spacers, brackets, keys, and structural support components.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, maintenance and repair operations, and light fabrication environments. Typical applications include the production of jigs and fixtures, machine bases, weld-on tabs, and general structural members where close dimensional control is needed without the cost of ground or precision stock. It can be cut, drilled, tapped, welded, and formed with standard shop equipment. The C1018 grade responds well to case hardening when surface wear resistance is needed on finished parts.
General-purpose flat bar stock suitable for machining, fabrication, and maintenance applications where AISI C1018 low carbon steel is specified.
Cut to final length using a horizontal band saw, cold saw, or abrasive cutoff wheel rated for ferrous stock. Secure the workpiece firmly in a vise or fixture before machining or grinding operations. Deburr all cut edges before handling or fitting. When welding, follow standard procedures for low carbon mild steel and allow parts to cool before final dimensioning.
