The STARRETT 54950 is a low carbon steel flat stock bar measuring 24 inches long, 0.5 inches wide, and 0.3125 inches thick, manufactured to AISI Type C1018 material specification. This bar stock is precision-ground and tolerance-controlled, making it suitable for layout, toolmaking, fixture building, and general machining applications. The C1018 low carbon steel composition provides good machinability and weldability. Dimensional tolerances are tightly held: length tolerance is plus 0.625 inches, width tolerance is plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches, and thickness and square tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians typically use this stock for fabrication and repair work.
This flat stock is suited for light fabrication, maintenance repair, and toolroom use in both commercial and industrial settings. The C1018 alloy machines cleanly and accepts welding without significant pre-treatment, making it a common choice when close-tolerance raw stock is needed for custom components, brackets, guides, and fixtures. Its precision width and thickness tolerances reduce secondary grinding or finishing time for critical fit applications.
Designed as a general-purpose low carbon steel flat bar for toolroom, fabrication, and maintenance applications requiring AISI C1018 material specification.
Cutting, drilling, and shaping should be performed by a qualified machinist or fabricator using appropriate tooling for low carbon steel. Wear proper PPE including eye protection and cut-resistant gloves when handling and machining bar stock. De-burr all cut edges before use in assemblies. If welding, follow applicable AWS standards for low carbon steel.
