The STARRETT 54795 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need a precision-ground blank ready for heat treatment. Measuring 1 inch thick, 6 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is held to tight tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inch on thickness and squareness, plus 0.000 to 0.005 inch on width, and plus 0.250 inch on length. AISI A2 tool steel offers good dimensional stability through the air-hardening process, making it a preferred choice for dies, punches, gauges, and precision tooling components that require minimal distortion after hardening.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance departments that fabricate or repair tooling in-house. The 1 inch by 6 inch cross-section supports applications requiring substantial stock removal or layout of multiple smaller tool blanks from a single piece. At 18 inches in length, the bar provides adequate working length for most single-component die sections or gauge plates. It ships in a single piece per package and is sold individually with a minimum order quantity of one.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock blank suitable for general tool and die fabrication, gauge making, and precision machining applications where air-hardening steel stock is specified.
Machining, grinding, and heat treatment of A2 tool steel should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists familiar with tool steel handling procedures. Follow the steel manufacturer's recommended austenitizing, soaking, and air-cooling parameters for A2 material to achieve the target hardness without distortion. Grinding operations should use appropriate wheel specifications for tool steel to avoid surface burns. Personal protective equipment including eye protection and heat-resistant gloves is required during handling and heat treatment.
