The STARRETT 54792 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, die makers, and machinist trades requiring tight-tolerance raw material for cutting tools, punches, dies, and precision fixtures. Measuring 1 inch thick by 4 inches wide by 18 inches long, this flat stock ships at 20.32 pounds and holds thickness and squareness tolerances of plus or minus 0.001 inches. The A2 grade is an air-hardening, medium-alloy cold-work tool steel offering good dimensional stability during heat treatment and balanced wear resistance, making it a reliable choice for tool and die applications where distortion must be minimized.
A2 flat stock at this cross-section is suited for both production tooling and prototype work in job shops, tool rooms, and manufacturing maintenance departments. The 18-inch length provides a practical starting cut for multiple blanks. Width tolerance is held to plus 0.000 to plus 0.005 inches, and length tolerance is plus 0.250 inches, both consistent with precision ground flat stock standards. Machinists and tool and die makers working to close final dimensions typically rough-machine before hardening, then finish-grind to final size after heat treat.
Designed as a standard A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock for use in tool and die fabrication, punch and die sets, precision fixtures, and general cold-work tooling applications requiring AISI A2 material specification.
Cutting, grinding, and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers familiar with AISI A2 processing requirements. Use appropriate coolant when sawing or grinding to prevent surface decarburization. Heat treatment including hardening and tempering should follow the material manufacturer's recommended thermal cycle for A2 grade. Always wear appropriate PPE when machining or handling tool steel stock.
