The STARRETT 54785 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.875 inches thick, 4 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock ships in an annealed condition and is ready for machining prior to heat treatment. A2 tool steel offers a good balance of toughness and wear resistance with minimal distortion during air-hardening, making it a preferred choice for punches, dies, gauges, and forming tools. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die makers are the primary installers and users of this material.
This flat stock is suited for both production and prototype tooling in job shop and manufacturing environments. The 18-inch length provides usable stock for a wide range of tool blanks and components without requiring a full bar cut. Tight dimensional tolerances on thickness, width, and squareness allow direct use off the shelf with minimal cleanup passes before finish machining and heat treating.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock blank suitable for use in toolmaking, die making, punch fabrication, and gauge manufacturing applications requiring air-hardening steel.
Machining and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by qualified tool-and-die makers or machinists familiar with A2 steel processing. Follow the steel manufacturer's recommended preheat and hardening temperature ranges when heat treating. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting, grinding, or machining tool steel. Allow material to reach ambient temperature before performing precision layout or measurement.
