The STARRETT 54784 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar cut to 7/8 inch thick, 3 inches wide, and 18 inches long. A2 tool steel offers good wear resistance, dimensional stability during heat treatment, and moderate toughness, making it a widely used material for dies, punches, gauges, and cutting tools. This flat stock ships in a precision-ground, ready-to-machine condition with tight tolerances held across thickness, width, and length. Machinists, tool and die makers, and industrial maintenance professionals work with this stock when fabricating or repairing tooling that will be air-hardened in service.
This flat stock is suited for job-shop and production tooling applications where reliable dimensional accuracy is required before and after heat treat. Common uses include blanking dies, forming punches, master plates, and precision gauging components. The A2 specification ensures predictable through-hardening with minimal distortion during air-quench cycles, which reduces post-heat-treat grinding allowances and saves setup time on surface grinders and mill machines.
Designed as a standard AISI A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for fabrication of dies, punches, gauges, and general tooling components where air-quench hardening is specified.
Work with this material using standard tool steel machining practices — carbide tooling is recommended for milling and drilling operations. Heat treatment should be performed by a qualified heat treater following established A2 air-hardening procedures per the material specification. Always allow the stock to reach ambient temperature before performing final precision grinding. Inspect dimensions and squareness after heat treat before final grinding to finished size.
