The STARRETT 54778 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, die makers, machinists, and industrial maintenance professionals who require tight dimensional tolerances straight from stock. Measuring 0.75 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this bar is supplied to a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches, a square tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches, a width tolerance of plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches, and a length tolerance of plus 0.250 inches. At 22.88 pounds, the bar is sized for bench work, milling, or EDM operations prior to heat treatment.
A2 tool steel is a general-purpose air-hardening grade well suited for punches, dies, gauges, forming tools, and precision machine components where dimensional stability during hardening is critical. This flat stock format allows the technician or machinist to saw, mill, grind, or EDM the bar to final geometry before subjecting it to heat treatment. It is used in both production toolrooms and maintenance shops handling custom tooling fabrication.
Designed as a general-purpose A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for toolroom fabrication of punches, dies, gauges, and precision components requiring air-hardening steel of AISI A2 specification.
Machining and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists familiar with AISI A2 steel processing procedures. All cutting, grinding, and EDM operations should be completed before hardening. Follow the steel manufacturer's recommended austenitizing, quenching, and tempering parameters for A2 grade. Wear appropriate PPE when cutting or grinding tool steel bar stock.
