The STARRETT 54775 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.75 inches thick by 4 inches wide by 18 inches long, this flat stock is machined to tight dimensional tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness and square, plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches on width, and plus 0.250 inches on length. AISI A2 tool steel offers good wear resistance and dimensional stability during heat treatment, making it a reliable choice for cutting tools, punches, dies, and gauges. Machinists and tool-and-die tradespeople specify A2 for its balance of toughness and hardness after air hardening.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating custom tooling components in job shops, production machine shops, and maintenance departments. Typical applications include blanking dies, forming tools, shear blades, and precision fixtures where consistent stock dimensions reduce setup time. The 18-inch length provides sufficient material for most single-piece tooling jobs without requiring additional rough stock removal. The 4-inch width accommodates wider die components that cannot be sourced from narrower bar stock.
Designed as a standard AISI A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for use in any application requiring A2 material in 0.75-inch by 4-inch cross-section form.
A2 tool steel flat stock is machined, ground, or EDM-processed by qualified machinists and tool-and-die makers prior to heat treatment. Secure workpieces properly before cutting or grinding operations to prevent movement. Air-hardening heat treatment should be performed by a qualified heat treater following AISI A2 specifications; improper hardening can cause distortion or cracking. Allow material to reach ambient temperature before performing final inspection measurements.
