The STARRETT 54771 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, die makers, and machinists who require close-tolerance raw material for precision tooling applications. Measuring 0.75 inches thick, 2 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is produced to tight dimensional tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness, plus or minus 0.001 inches square, plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches on width, and plus 0.250 inches on length. A2 tool steel offers a balance of wear resistance and toughness with minimal distortion during air-hardening heat treatment, making it well suited for punches, dies, gauges, and similar tooling components.
This flat stock is used in job shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance machining environments where A2 is specified for its predictable heat-treat response and dimensional stability. It is appropriate for fabricating blanking dies, forming tools, shear blades, and precision gauging fixtures. The 18-inch length provides enough material for most single-component tooling blanks without requiring additional cuts. The stock arrives in the annealed condition and must be machined to final dimensions before hardening.

Machining and heat treatment of A2 tool steel should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists familiar with the material requirements. All machining to final dimensions should be completed before hardening. Heat treatment must follow applicable A2 steel specifications for austenitizing temperature, air-quench procedure, and tempering cycles — consult the material data sheet or a qualified heat treater. Grinding operations after hardening should use appropriate wheel selection to avoid surface burns.
