The STARRETT 54762 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.625 inches thick, 3 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is held to tight dimensional tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness, plus or minus 0.001 inches on squareness, plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches on width, and plus 0.250 inches on length. A2 tool steel offers good wear resistance and dimensional stability through the air-hardening process, making it a reliable choice for cutting tools, punches, and forming dies. Machinists and tool-and-die makers are the primary users of this material.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, maintenance toolrooms, and production die shops requiring precision-ground or saw-cut tool steel in standard sizes. It is appropriate for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, and other tooling components where controlled hardness and dimensional accuracy are critical. The 18-inch length provides a practical working blank for a wide range of tooling layouts. A2 air-hardening steel is commonly selected when distortion during heat treatment must be minimized compared to oil-hardening grades.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock blank for use in general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining where AISI A2 air-hardening material is specified.
Cutting, grinding, and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or tool-and-die makers using appropriate equipment. Follow the material manufacturer's recommended heat-treat cycle for A2 tool steel to achieve target hardness. Use proper personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding. Consult applicable shop safety standards before machining or heat treating.
