The STARRETT 54737 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die-making, and precision machining applications. Cut to 3/8 inch thick, 5 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is held to tight dimensional tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness and squareness, plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches on width, and plus 0.250 inches on length. A2 tool steel offers a good balance of wear resistance and toughness, and it air-hardens after heat treatment, reducing distortion compared to oil-hardening grades. Machinists and toolmakers rely on this material for punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, tool and die shops, and maintenance departments that need ready-to-machine A2 stock. The 18-inch length provides usable blank material for a single large tool or multiple smaller components. The 5-inch width accommodates larger die plates or blanks without requiring additional material joining. It is appropriate for both prototype and production toolmaking environments where dimensional accuracy at the raw stock stage reduces setup time at the machine.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock blank compatible with conventional and CNC machining operations requiring AISI A2 air-hardening material in 3/8 x 5 x 18-inch dimensions.
A2 tool steel flat stock is worked by machinists and toolmakers using conventional milling, grinding, and EDM equipment. Material should be stress-relieved before finish machining when tight final tolerances are required. Heat treatment to harden A2 steel should be performed by a qualified heat treater following AISI guidelines for this alloy. Handle edges carefully after machining, as tool steel edges can be sharp.
