The STARRETT 54731 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Measuring 3/8 inch thick, 2 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is ground to tight tolerances: thickness and squareness are held to plus or minus 0.001 inch, width tolerance is plus 0.000 to 0.005 inch, and length tolerance is plus 0.250 inch. A2 tool steel offers good dimensional stability during air-hardening heat treatment, making it a reliable choice for punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools where consistent geometry is critical.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, tool-and-die operations, and maintenance departments that fabricate or repair precision tooling in-house. It ships in a single bar at 3.84 pounds, ready for layout, machining, and heat treatment. The 18-inch length provides enough stock for most single-component tooling applications without excess material waste. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die makers are the primary users of this stock.
Designed as a standard AISI A2 air-hardening tool steel flat bar for use in general toolmaking, die-making, and precision fabrication applications where A2 material specification is required.
Machining and heat treatment of A2 tool steel should be performed by qualified tool-and-die makers or machinists familiar with air-hardening steel procedures. Allow the stock to reach room temperature before layout and machining. Follow established heat treatment procedures for AISI A2 tool steel, including proper soaking temperatures and controlled air-cool cycles, to avoid distortion or cracking. Use appropriate cutting fluids and tooling rated for hardened or pre-hardened steel stock.
