The STARRETT 54730 is a precision-ground A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need a reliable, dimensionally consistent blank for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, and other tooling components. Measuring 0.375 inches thick, 1.5 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this bar is held to tight tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness and squareness, plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches on width, and plus 0.250 inches on length. A2 tool steel offers excellent dimensional stability during air-hardening heat treatment, making it a preferred choice when distortion control is critical.
This flat stock is suited for machine shops, tool-and-die operations, and maintenance departments in manufacturing environments. It is a standard starting material for custom tooling where precise stock dimensions reduce secondary machining time. The 18-inch bar length accommodates a range of short- to mid-length tooling applications. A2 air-hardening grade is commonly specified in applications requiring moderate toughness combined with good wear resistance after hardening.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock blank for use in fabricating punches, dies, gauges, and general tooling components wherever AISI A2 air-hardening material is specified.
Cutting and machining should be performed with tooling rated for hardened or semi-hard tool steel stock. Heat treatment of A2 tool steel should follow the material manufacturer's published hardening and tempering procedures and should be performed by qualified personnel with appropriate furnace equipment. Allow the bar to reach ambient temperature before final inspection of dimensions. Grinding and EDM operations are commonly used for finish work after hardening.
