The STARRETT 54720 is a precision-ground A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolroom, die-making, and machining applications. Measuring 5/16 inch thick, 2 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is held to tight tolerances suitable for tool and die work, jig components, and custom cutting tools. The AISI A2 grade offers excellent dimensional stability during air hardening, making it a reliable choice when heat treat distortion must be minimized. Thickness tolerance is plus or minus 0.001 inch, and the piece ships ready for layout and machining operations.
This flat stock is suited for toolroom environments, job shops, and manufacturing facilities where precise blanks are required for punches, dies, gauges, and forming tools. The 18-inch length provides adequate stock for most single-component blanks. The 2-inch width and 5/16-inch thickness are common sizes for die sections and wear plates. A2 tool steel is typically chosen for applications requiring moderate toughness alongside good wear resistance after hardening and tempering.
Designed as a standard A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock blank for use in toolroom, die-making, and precision machining applications requiring AISI A2 material specification.
Machining and grinding of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists using appropriate cutting fluids and tooling rated for hardened or pre-hardened steels. Heat treating should follow AISI A2 austenitizing and air-quench procedures; consult a certified heat treat facility for cycle specifications. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or handling tool steel stock. Deburr all edges after cutting to prevent handling injuries.
