The STARRETT 54704 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 1 inch thick, 2-1/2 inches wide, and 36 inches long. A2 tool steel offers a balance of wear resistance and toughness, making it well suited for dies, punches, gauges, and similar precision tooling applications. The bar is held to tight dimensional tolerances — plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness and squareness, plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches on width, and plus 0.25 inches on length — which supports accurate stock removal and consistent fitment in toolroom and fabrication environments. Machinists, tool and die makers, and industrial fabricators work with this material in both job shop and production settings.
This flat stock is intended for use in toolroom, die shop, and precision machining environments where close-tolerance starting stock is required before heat treatment. It is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining to final dimensions prior to air-hardening. Typical applications include blanking dies, forming tools, precision gauges, and fixture components. The 36-inch bar length provides practical working stock for single-piece and short-run tooling jobs without excessive material waste.

Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers using appropriate metalworking equipment. All heat treatment, including air-hardening and tempering cycles, must follow established metallurgical procedures for AISI A2 tool steel and should be performed by qualified personnel or a certified heat treat facility. Wear appropriate PPE when cutting or grinding. Final dimensions and surface finish should be achieved before hardening, as post-hardening machining requires grinding equipment.
