The STARRETT 54702 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 1 inch thick by 1 inch wide by 36 inches long. A2 tool steel is a versatile cold-work die steel known for its good balance of wear resistance, toughness, and dimensional stability during heat treatment. Air-hardening minimizes distortion and cracking risk during the hardening cycle. The bar ships in the annealed condition, ready for machining, grinding, and final hardening by a tool and die maker, machinist, or industrial maintenance professional. At 11.72 pounds, the bar is sized for bench-scale tooling work.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, forming tools, and similar cold-work tooling in job shops, tool rooms, and maintenance departments. The tight tolerances on thickness and squareness make it appropriate for applications where close-tolerance blanks are required before final grinding. It is a standard bar format used in both one-off toolmaking and low-volume production tool fabrication.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock bar suitable for cold-work tooling, die making, punch fabrication, and gauge manufacture where AISI A2 air-hardening steel is specified.
Machining and grinding of A2 tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers using appropriate cutting speeds and coolant for tool steel. Heat treatment should follow established AISI A2 austenitizing and air-quench procedures and is typically performed by a qualified heat treater. Always allow the bar to reach ambient temperature before precision measurement. Secure the workpiece properly before any cutting or grinding operation.
