The STARRETT 54700 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 7/8 inch thick, 4 inches wide, and 36 inches long. A2 tool steel is a versatile cold-work die steel known for its excellent dimensional stability during heat treatment and strong wear resistance after hardening. This flat stock is ground to tight tolerances, with thickness and squareness held to plus or minus 0.001 inch, making it suitable for precision tooling applications. It is used by tool-and-die makers, machinists, and metalworking shops that require accurate, ready-to-machine stock for dies, punches, gauges, and fixtures.
This flat stock is suited for cold-work tooling applications in job shops, tool rooms, and manufacturing facilities. Its air-hardening characteristic means less distortion during the hardening cycle compared to oil-hardening grades, making it a preferred choice when dimensional accuracy post-heat-treat is critical. The 36-inch length provides ample material for multiple tool blanks from a single piece. Width tolerance is held to plus 0.000 to 0.005 inch, and length tolerance is plus 0.25 inch, consistent with standard tool steel flat stock practice.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock blank for use in cold-work die sets, punches, gauges, and precision fixtures requiring an air-hardening tool steel grade.
Machining and heat treatment of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified tool-and-die makers or machinists familiar with A2 steel requirements. All cutting, grinding, and EDM operations should be completed before hardening. Follow the steel manufacturer's recommended austenitizing and quench procedures for A2 grade to achieve target hardness. Appropriate personal protective equipment and machine guarding must be used during all machining and heat-treating operations.
