The STARRETT 54699 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar supplied in a ready-to-machine condition for toolmakers, die makers, and precision machinists. Measuring 0.875 inches thick, 3 inches wide, and 36 inches long, this flat stock is held to tight dimensional tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness and squareness, plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches on width, and plus 0.25 inches on length. A2 tool steel offers a balanced combination of wear resistance and toughness, making it a widely used material for blanking dies, forming dies, punches, and gauges. The bar ships at approximately 30.78 pounds.
This flat stock is suited for tool and die shops, mold making operations, and precision machining facilities where close-tolerance blanks are required. A2 air-hardening steel is commonly specified when oil-hardening grades introduce unacceptable distortion risk during heat treatment. The 36-inch length allows multiple blanks to be cut from a single bar, reducing material waste in short-run tooling applications. It is appropriate for both production tooling and maintenance tool fabrication in industrial settings.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock blank suitable for fabrication of dies, punches, gauges, and other precision tooling components requiring air-hardening steel.
Cutting, grinding, and machining should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists using equipment rated for hardened and semi-hardened tool steels. Follow the steel manufacturer heat treatment guidelines for A2 material when hardening and tempering. Proper eye protection, machine guarding, and chip containment are required during all machining operations. Allow the bar to reach ambient temperature before taking final dimensional measurements.
