The STARRETT 54693 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, die makers, and machinists who require tight dimensional tolerances and predictable heat-treat performance. This bar measures 0.75 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches and a squareness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches. A2 tool steel air-hardens with minimal distortion compared to oil-hardening grades, making it a preferred choice for punches, dies, gages, and cutting tools where dimensional stability through hardening is critical.
This flat stock is suited for use in tool and die shops, maintenance and repair operations, and precision machining environments. The bar ships in annealed condition, ready for machining prior to heat treatment. At 0.75 inches thick and 6 inches wide, this is a heavy-section bar appropriate for large punch-and-die sets, forming tools, and similar toolroom applications requiring substantial cross-section material.
Designed as a standard A2 air-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolroom fabrication, punch and die construction, gage making, and other precision tooling applications requiring AISI A2 material specification.
Machining and heat treatment of A2 tool steel should be performed by a qualified toolmaker or machinist familiar with AISI air-hardening grades. Follow the material manufacturer's recommended austenitizing, hardening, and tempering procedures for A2 tool steel. Always use appropriate personal protective equipment and machine guarding when cutting or grinding tool steel bar stock. Consult applicable shop safety standards before processing.
