The STARRETT 54681 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.625 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 36 inches long, this flat stock is ground to tight dimensional tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness, plus or minus 0.001 inches on squareness, and a width tolerance of plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches. The length tolerance is plus 0.25 inches. AISI A2 tool steel offers good wear resistance and dimensional stability through the air-hardening process, making it a preferred choice for blanks, punches, and die components.
This flat stock is suited for tool and die shops, machine shops, and industrial fabrication environments. It is commonly used to machine custom tooling blanks, gauges, forming dies, and precision components where consistent hardness and tight dimensional tolerances are required. The 0.625-inch thickness and 6-inch width provide a substantial cross-section for applications demanding material that can be machined, ground, heat-treated, and finish-ground to final dimensions. Machinists and toolmakers working on low-to-medium production tooling will find this bar stock a standard starting material.
Designed as a standard AISI A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock for use in tool and die, mold making, and precision machining applications requiring ground flat bar in 0.625-inch by 6-inch cross-section.
Machining and heat treatment of A2 tool steel should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists familiar with air-hardening steel procedures. Appropriate personal protective equipment and machine guarding are required during cutting, grinding, and machining operations. A2 steel hardens by air cooling from austenitizing temperature — consult the material specification and your heat treat supplier for proper thermal cycling procedures. Handle large flat stock sections with mechanical lifting aids given the significant weight of this bar.
