The STARRETT 54676 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, die makers, machinists, and maintenance technicians who need a dimensionally precise blank for cutting tools, punches, dies, and fixtures. Measuring 0.625 inches thick by 2.5 inches wide by 36 inches long and weighing 18.32 pounds, this flat stock is ground to tight tolerances on all faces. The AISI A2 grade provides excellent dimensional stability during heat treatment and good wear resistance after hardening, making it a reliable choice when consistent performance across a tool's service life is required.
This flat stock is suited for job shop, toolroom, and maintenance applications where a precision-ground bar is needed as raw material. Typical uses include fabricating blanks for stamping dies, form tools, gauges, and wear plates in both light industrial and heavy manufacturing environments. The 36-inch length allows multiple shorter pieces to be cut from a single bar, reducing waste on multi-part tooling projects.
Designed as a standard AISI A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock blank compatible with conventional toolroom machining, grinding, EDM, and heat-treat processes that call for A2 grade material.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers using appropriate carbide or high-speed tooling. Follow established shop safety practices including eye protection and secure workholding when sawing or grinding. Heat treatment of A2 tool steel should be carried out according to the applicable material specification and performed in a controlled atmosphere furnace to minimize decarburization. Always allow the bar to reach ambient temperature before performing final-tolerance grinding operations.
