The STARRETT 54649 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.375 inches thick, 3.5 inches wide, and 36 inches long, this bar is cut and ground to close tolerances: thickness and squareness held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, width held to plus 0.000 to plus 0.005 inches, and length to plus 0.25 inches. A2 tool steel offers good wear resistance, dimensional stability during heat treatment, and moderate toughness, making it a reliable choice for punches, dies, gauges, and similar toolroom components. The bar weighs approximately 15.39 pounds.
This flat stock is suited to toolroom and industrial environments where close-tolerance A2 material is required in a ready-to-machine bar form. Typical applications include blanking dies, forming dies, trim dies, gauging fixtures, and cutting tools. Machinists, tool and die makers, and industrial maintenance professionals work with this stock on manual and CNC equipment before heat treating to final hardness. The 36-inch length provides practical bar stock for single-part layouts or multiple shorter blanks depending on the project.
Designed as standard A2 air-hardening tool steel flat bar stock for general toolroom and die-making applications requiring AISI A2 material specification.
Tool and die makers and machinists should use appropriate cutting tools rated for tool steel when machining this stock in the annealed condition. Heat treatment to working hardness should follow AISI A2 recommended cycles and must be performed by qualified personnel using controlled atmosphere or vacuum furnace equipment to minimize decarburization. Always allow the bar to reach ambient temperature before final tolerance inspection. Proper personal protective equipment is required during machining and heat treating operations.
