The STARRETT 54644 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, die makers, machinists, and fabricators who need a reliable starting blank for precision tooling and fixture components. Measuring 0.375 inches thick, 1.25 inches wide, and 36 inches long, this flat stock is cut and ground to tight tolerances: thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches, width tolerance of plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches, and length tolerance of plus 0.25 inches. A2 tool steel offers good wear resistance and dimensional stability through the hardening process, making it well suited for punches, dies, gauges, and forming tools that require predictable heat treatment response.
This flat stock is used in tool and die shops, maintenance departments, and precision manufacturing environments. It is appropriate for machining into custom punches, blanking dies, stripper plates, and other tooling components where air-hardening steel is specified. The 36-inch bar length provides sufficient material for multiple parts to be cut from a single piece, reducing scrap. Squareness across all edges is held to 0.003 inches per inch, supporting accurate layout and machining from the blank state.
Designed as a general-purpose A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock blank for use in tool and die fabrication, fixture building, and precision machining applications where AISI A2 material specification is required.
Cutting and machining should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers using appropriate metal-cutting equipment and coolant. Heat treatment to full hardness should follow AISI A2 guidelines and be performed by a qualified heat treater; air-hardening steels must be allowed to cool in still air and should not be quenched in water or oil. Inspect dimensions after any grinding or surface preparation before committing the blank to a finished tool profile. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment when sawing, grinding, or machining tool steel.
