The STARRETT 54641 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Measuring 5/16 inch thick, 5 inches wide, and 36 inches long, this flat stock is supplied in annealed condition and is ready for machining before heat treatment. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, and width tolerance is held to plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches, making it suitable for applications where dimensional control matters from the start. AISI A2 tool steel offers good wear resistance and dimensional stability during air-hardening heat treatment, which reduces distortion compared to oil- or water-quenched grades.
This flat stock is used by tool and die makers, machinists, and industrial maintenance professionals for fabricating punches, dies, gages, blades, and wear components. It is appropriate for both prototype and production tooling applications in job shops and manufacturing facilities. The 36-inch length provides flexibility for single-piece or multiple smaller blanks cut from one bar. The 5-inch width accommodates larger die sections or wide blade profiles without the need for welding or joining narrower stock.
Designed as a standard A2 air-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for toolmaking, die work, and precision component fabrication where AISI A2 material specification is required.
Machining and heat treatment of tool steel flat stock is typically performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers. Material should be stress-relieved before finish machining when tight dimensional tolerances are required after hardening. Follow the alloy manufacturer's recommended heat treatment cycle for AISI A2 tool steel, including appropriate preheat, hardening temperature, and tempering parameters. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting, grinding, or handling tool steel bar stock.
