The STARRETT 54637 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar designed for toolmakers, die makers, machinists, and maintenance professionals who require tight-tolerance stock for fabricating punches, dies, jigs, fixtures, and tooling components. This flat stock measures 5/16 inches thick, 3 inches wide, and 36 inches long. It is manufactured to AISI A2 tool steel specification, which offers excellent dimensional stability during heat treatment, good wear resistance, and moderate toughness. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for precision tooling applications where ground stock is not required but close control is.
A2 air-hardening flat stock is commonly used in job shops, tool rooms, and manufacturing facilities for producing blanks and components that will be machined, heat treated, and finished in-house. The 3-inch width and 36-inch length make this a versatile bar for medium-sized tooling blanks. AISI A2 is a preferred general-purpose tool steel where D2 may be too brittle and O1 lacks the dimensional stability needed during air-hardening cycles. Licensed machinists and tool and die makers are the primary users of this material.

Heat treatment of A2 tool steel should follow the material manufacturer's guidelines and be performed by personnel familiar with air-hardening steel protocols. Always secure workpieces properly before machining to prevent movement and injury. Allow material to reach ambient temperature before taking final dimensional measurements.
