The STARRETT 54629 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, die makers, and machinists who require close-tolerance raw material ready for hardening and finishing. Measuring 0.25 inches thick, 5 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is manufactured to AISI Type A2 material specification. Thickness and square tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, width tolerance is plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches, and length tolerance is plus 0.250 inches. These tight tolerances reduce the amount of pre-machining required before hardening. The part weighs 6.38 pounds.
A2 air-hardening tool steel is a general-purpose cold-work die steel well suited for punches, dies, forming tools, gages, and cutting tools. It offers good dimensional stability during heat treatment because it is hardened in air rather than oil or water, which reduces distortion in precision components. This flat stock is appropriate for both jobshop and production toolroom environments where consistent, grindable stock is needed. It is commonly used by tool and die shops, maintenance machinists, and industrial maintenance departments.
Designed as a general-purpose A2 tool steel flat stock suitable for cold-work tooling applications including punches, dies, gages, and forming tools requiring air-hardening material.
Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers using appropriate coolant and tooling rated for hardened or pre-hardened steel. Heat treatment to full hardness should be carried out by a qualified heat treater following the recommended austenitizing and tempering procedures for AISI A2 tool steel. Always use personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding steel stock. Consult applicable shop safety standards before beginning any machining operation.
