The STARRETT 54625 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Cut to 0.25 inches thick, 3 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this piece is ground to tight tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness, plus or minus 0.001 inches square, plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches on width, and plus 0.250 inches on length. A2 tool steel offers a good balance of wear resistance, toughness, and dimensional stability through the air-hardening heat treat process. Licensed machinists, toolmakers, and die makers are the primary users of this material.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating blanking dies, punches, form dies, gauges, and precision fixtures where controlled heat treatment and tight as-ground tolerances are required. The air-hardening characteristic of A2 minimizes distortion during hardening compared to oil-hardening grades, making it a reliable choice for complex tool profiles. It is used in both job shop and production toolroom environments where dimensional accuracy from the raw stock forward is critical to finished part quality.
Designed as a standard AISI A2 tool steel flat stock suitable for toolroom, die shop, and precision machining applications requiring air-hardening grade material.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists using appropriate coolant and tooling rated for hardened or semi-hardened steel. Heat treatment of A2 steel requires a controlled atmosphere or vacuum furnace to achieve proper hardness and minimize scale; consult the material specification and a qualified heat treater before processing. Always use appropriate personal protective equipment when sawing, grinding, or milling tool steel stock.
