The STARRETT 54619 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, fixture fabrication, and precision machining applications. Cut to 3/16 inch thick, 6 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is held to tight dimensional tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inch on thickness, plus or minus 0.001 inch square, plus 0.000 to 0.005 inch on width, and plus 0.250 inch on length. A2 tool steel offers excellent dimensional stability during air hardening, making it a preferred choice where distortion control after heat treat is critical. This bar ships at 5.76 pounds.
A2 air-hardening flat stock is used primarily by tool and die makers, machinists, and mold makers working in job shops, maintenance departments, and production environments. It is commonly machined into punches, dies, forming tools, gages, and fixture components. The air-hardening characteristic of AISI A2 tool steel reduces quench distortion compared to oil-hardening grades, which makes it well suited for close-tolerance tooling that must hold its shape through the full hardening cycle. This size, at 3/16 inch thick and 6 inches wide, is appropriate for flat die plates, stripper plates, and similar wide, thin tooling stock.

Machining of A2 tool steel flat stock is performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers using conventional milling, grinding, and EDM equipment. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should be performed by a qualified heat treater following AISI A2 tool steel specifications. Allow for material movement and finish grind after hardening to achieve final dimensional requirements. Always follow applicable shop safety practices when handling and machining tool steel.
