The STARRETT 54617 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. It ships in an annealed condition and is ready for machining before hardening in air. At 3/16 inches thick, 4 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is sized for moderate tooling projects and component blanks. Dimensional tolerances are held to tight standards: thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches, width tolerance of plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches, and a length tolerance of plus 0.250 inches. These specs make it suitable where close-tolerance stock is required before final grinding or heat treating.
A2 tool steel is a widely used air-hardening alloy valued for its dimensional stability during heat treatment and its balance of wear resistance and toughness. This flat stock is appropriate for blanks, punches, dies, gauges, and similar toolroom components in both job shop and production environments. Machinists, tool and die makers, and industrial maintenance technicians typically work with this material. It is commonly used in applications where repeatability of hardened dimensions is critical and where oil-hardening grades may introduce unacceptable distortion.
Designed as a general-purpose A2 tool steel flat stock blank suitable for toolroom machining, die making, punch fabrication, and gauge work where air-hardening alloy tool steel is specified.
Machining of A2 tool steel flat stock should be performed in the annealed condition prior to heat treatment. Heat treating and hardening operations should be carried out by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures for A2 alloy tool steel. Appropriate personal protective equipment and ventilation are required during grinding and machining. Refer to the material supplier data sheet and applicable shop safety standards before processing.
