The STARRETT 54604 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, fixture building, and precision machining applications. Sized at 5/32 inches thick, 2-1/2 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is held to tight dimensional tolerances, including plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness and squareness. A2 tool steel offers a good balance of wear resistance, toughness, and dimensional stability through the air-hardening heat treatment process. Machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians use this stock to fabricate punches, dies, gauges, and similar precision components.
This flat stock is suited for both job shop and production toolroom environments where close-tolerance blanks are required. The 18-inch length provides enough material for a range of small-to-medium tooling blanks without excessive waste. The controlled width and thickness tolerances reduce the amount of finish grinding needed before the workpiece enters the heat treat cycle. AISI A2 material is commonly specified for cold-work tooling where moderate impact resistance and good dimensional stability during hardening are priorities.

Machining and grinding of A2 tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers using appropriate cutting fluids and tooling rated for tool steel. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should follow established metallurgical procedures for AISI A2 and should be performed by personnel familiar with tool steel heat treatment practice. Always allow the workpiece to reach ambient temperature before taking final measurements to ensure dimensional accuracy.
