The STARRETT 54592 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.125 inches thick, 2 inches wide, and 18 inches long, it is manufactured to tight dimensional tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness, plus or minus 0.001 inches for squareness, and a width tolerance of plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches. The 18-inch length carries a plus 0.250-inch length tolerance. Machinists, toolmakers, and die shops rely on A2 grade stock for its excellent dimensional stability during air hardening, making it a preferred choice for punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools.
This flat stock is suited for both prototype and production tooling environments. A2 tool steel responds well to conventional milling, grinding, and EDM operations in the annealed state before hardening. It is commonly used in job shops and in-house toolrooms where consistent stock dimensions are required for fixtures, stripper plates, and form tools. The 18-inch length provides enough material for multiple parts from a single piece, reducing setup changes on the mill or surface grinder.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications requiring air-hardening material in bar stock form.
Handling and machining of tool steel flat stock is typically performed by machinists and toolmakers using conventional milling, grinding, or sawing equipment. Ensure proper workholding and coolant application during machining to maintain dimensional accuracy. Heat treatment should be performed by a qualified heat treater following A2 steel hardening and tempering procedures. Always allow stock to reach ambient temperature before final inspection or grinding.
